The University of Cape Town has a long and proud tradition as a centre for research and teaching in the field of Marine Biology, dating back more than a century. Academic and research staff and postgraduate students in the Department of Biological Sciences work in fields including fisheries biology, biological oceanography, aquaculture, systematics, marine parasitology and coastal ecology.
The Department offers BSc and Honours degrees specialising in Marine Biology and is the administrative home for an interdisciplinary Masters degree (by coursework and dissertation) in Applied Marine Science. Marine biologists in the Department, along with more than 100 marine researchers and postgraduate students from departments across the campus, are associated with the Marine Research (Ma-Re) Institute (www.ma-re.uct.ac.za).
